Can anyone confirm when the round wiper arms fitted to Split window Beetles were changed to the flat section ones? Was it at the end of Split or Zwitter production, or did they continue through to the end of 1953 (ie fitted to 1953 Ovals)?

Also, for 1953, what should the profile be for the wiper rubbers?

Thanks,
Dave

Hello Dave,

My book says that the round wiper erms changed 01.10.1952!
However my book doesn't say's anything of what kind of rubber(s) that was used!!
That's a purist question!!!

Yep, changed with the Beetle's first radical redesign from the original KdF style to the new 'juke box' style dashed split, or Zwitter as known today.

Chassis number 1-0397 015 onward.

Do you say that because you've recently seen a Zwitter fitted with them, or a picture of a restored Zwitter fitted with them, or, because you've seen old original archive images of Zwitters with them:?:

I think that picture is of Nicolass's own Zwitter. But I don't know how original the car is. Nicolass?

Interesting, because I had a feeling that the round wiper arms were fitted to Zwitters, and also to 1953 Ovals up to a certain date. I'm just not sure what that date was...

Well I've done a bit of research &, according to VW Progressive Refinements, the wiper arm changed from round to flat on 21 December 1953. The blades changed on the same date.

Does anyone know how accurate Progressive Refinements is?

Ok, so it looks like my '53 should have them. I know it's unlikely, but does anyone have a set of decent original round wiper arms, blades & bases for sale (for a deluxe, not standard)?
